Nature’s Sunshine Co-Founder Kristine Hughes Passes Away Kristine Hughes leaves a legacy of helping others find health and prosperity through Nature’s Sunshine.
LEHI, Utah, February 24, 2020 — Kristine F. Hughes (August 9, 1938 – February 23, 2020), co-founder and board member of Nature’s Sunshine Products passed away peacefully this weekend at the age of 81, the company announced.
“Loved by her immediate family and her vast Nature’s Sunshine family, Kristine will be dearly missed, and her legacy will continue to be felt across our business,” said Nature’s Sunshine/Synergy WorldWide Chief Executive Officer Terrence Moorehead. “She deeply loved this company, and her personal interactions with distributors and employees forged relationships around the globe.”
Kristine’s innovative ideas and pioneering spirit were integral to the growth of Nature’s Sunshine. For nearly 48-years, she helped revolutionize the herbal and natural wellness industry and gave rise to the modern supplement industry we know today.
With her husband and family, Kristine began encapsulating herbs and selling them to health food stores. They quickly found a market for their products among a growing number of complementary and alternative healthcare practitioners across the United States, and the company blossomed, spreading to over 40 countries around the world.
Kristine’s passion for quality, integrity, and service propelled the company from a small, family-owned business to a multi-million dollar global enterprise helping to share the healing power of nature with the world. She remained active with the company throughout her life, serving as an officer in the company since 1980. Kristine served as Chief Executive Officer from 1996 to 1997 and in various capacities as a member of the board of directors for 35 years, including Chairperson of the Board from 1984 to 2012 and Vice-Chairperson of the Board from 2013 to 2019. Additionally, in 1998, she was recognized by Ernst & Young as Entrepreneur of the Year.
Though a leader in the business world, Kristine was best known for her commitment to her family and the relationships she formed with employees and Distributors. Kristine approached the business as an extension of her family and created a culture of caring for employees, Distributors, and customers that endeared her to those with whom she worked.
Despite her tremendous success, Kristine remained humble and never sought the spotlight. While her life epitomized the American Dream, she took her greatest satisfaction from sharing that opportunity with others around the world and giving them the ability to discover health and prosperity.
“Kristine dedicated her life to helping others discover greater vitality and opportunity through Nature’s Sunshine,” said Moorehead. “We will continue to honor her life and memory through our efforts to share nature’s healing power with the world.”
Kristine is survived by fellow Nature’s Sunshine founders, her husband, Gene Hughes, and Pauline Hughes, as well as her seven children, Craig Hughes, Chris Hughes, Heidi Hughes Hastings, Sherston Hughes Faux, Julie Hughes King, Jeni Hughes McCoard and Kristi Hughes Dowding, 37 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
Kristine requested not to have a funeral. A small, private memorial with her immediate family will be held sometime later this week. For those wishing to honor her memory, the family has asked for donations to the Impact Foundation in Kristine’s behalf in lieu of gifts or flowers.

Like
all muscles, your heart has to be trained in order to maintain its
strength and conditioning. Whether it’s a quick run in the morning, half
an hour on the stationary bike, or a leisurely walk around the
neighborhood, a few minutes of cardio each day can be a huge help to
your hearts overall health.
A strong heart helps to boosts your cardiovascular system, allowing your
body utilize oxygen more efficiently, and lower the risk for heart
disease. It even allows the heart to better repair itself when damaged.
There are four basic components to fitness: cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, and flexibility.
Cardiovascular endurance is vital because it directly coincides with
how effectively you can increase the other fitness elements.
Follow these tips to effectively train your heart to become stronger:
Engage Your Muscles
The American Heart Association recommends 30 minutes of
moderate/vigorous aerobic exercise on 4-5 days per week. To achieve more
benefits during your workout, focus on engaging the largest muscle
groups (chest, legs, back, and abs) in a continuous, rhythmic manner. By
doing this, your heart has to work harder to deliver oxygen-rich blood
to muscle tissue, which results in a mini workout that supports and
promotes your heart’s cardiovascular strength.
Cardio Intervals
If you want to jump start your heart health quickly, interval training
is a great place to begin. Intervals work by incorporating
high-intensity cardio with periods of lower, relaxed cardio. This
results in an extremely effective and efficient workout. Studies have
shown that doing 15 minutes of interval training has been linked to
preventing heart disease as well as improving your overall fitness.
Bonus: Interval training burns more calories per minute than simply jogging on a treadmill.
Weight Training
Similar to interval training, weight training is an effective way to
strengthen all the muscles in your body, especially your heart. The key
to having a productive weight training session is limiting the rest
period between sets. Most gym goers will rest for approximately 30-90
seconds between sets. However, if your goal is greater endurance (and a
stronger heart) you’ll have to surrender some break time. But trust us,
your heart will thank you.
Slow It Down
Although performing an intense cardio session is critical to your
heart’s health, it’s just as vital to know when to slow down. Too much
adrenaline in the system can be harmful to your heart. If your heart
rate is jumping up too high or you feel pain, decrease the intensity of
your workout to allow your heart to slow down. When your heart has
relaxed, gradually increase the intensity of your workout to a moderate
pace, but don’t overexert yourself. Be sure to drink water during “cool
down” periods since the heart tends to beat faster when the cells in
your body are dehydrated.
Get Enough Sleep
According to studies, young and middle-aged adults who sleep for
approximately 7 hours per night have less calcium build-up in their
arteries than those who sleep less than 6 hours or more than 9 hours.
Similarly, those who sleep more soundly during the night tend to have
healthier arteries than those who don’t. The quality of your sleep can
be directly reflected in the quality of your training and ultimately
influences how strong your heart is, and its potential to be
strengthened.
